Ramada/Sinai Stars Resort Ras Sidr

Location: The Ramada Ras Sudr resort, with its spacious grounds, is situated about 10 km south of the small town of Ras Sudr and about 80 km south of the Suez Canal.

Amenities and facilities: The bungalow-style resort has 160 units and villas. A large fresh-water pool with separate children's pools, wide terrace and snackbar provides an inviting setting for relaxation. The restaurant is in the main building itself, also the lounge bar and a minimarket. In the summer months, the terrace of the main building is used to expand the seating space of the restaurant. From here, you can enjoy the superb view over the entire resort down to the beach. There is a large beach with a snack bar. There is another beachbar next to Club Mistral wich is very popular for our guests.

Rooms: There are two types of room, depending on one's needs. Single rooms, double rooms with twin beds or king-size bed or suites. Most of the double rooms also have a connecting door to the next room for family use. The standard room is one room without terrace. The very spacious suite has a separate bedroom with kingsize bed and a living room with sofa, table and chairs beside this all suites have a huge terrace. In the suite can added extra beds for two more people or children. All rooms have private bath/WC air conditioning, phone, satellite TV and a minibar.

Number of rooms: 160

Room categories: double rooms, single rooms, suites

Children: Twp playgrounds- one on the beach and one near the pool area.

Sport: There is a fitniss club near the reception.

Extra: The hotel is located quite isolated with not a lot around. You can reach the village Ras Sudr in about 15 minutes by bus where you find some restaurants, bars and shops.

Our Opinion: This is something for ambitious wind and kitesurfers who do not need much more except a perfect spot! We would not recommend this place to people who are looking for more luxury and more activities beside watersport.

The Spot

Location:
Ras Sudr is in the western part of the Sinai Peninsula, just under 80km south of the Suez Canal tunnel. The Ramada Resort and Club Mistral center are about 15 km south of Ras Sudr (also spelt Ras Sedr).

Getting There:
You can travel to Ras Sudr via Cairo or Sharm el Sheik. Via Cairo is the shortest way, and you can also take advantage of the opportunity to visit the sights on the way there or back. If you wish to do so, it would be best to include at least one night's stay in Cairo in your travel schedule.

Getting There via Cairo:
If you have booked directly with Club Mistral, our agent, Midland Travel, will be responsible for your transfer. If you have made your own travel arrangements, we recommend taking a taxi or, alternatively, a rental car, although you will actually have very little need for a rental car once you are there and this would also be the more expensive alternative. The taxi driver should be familiar with your destination. If you opt for a rental car, leave Cairo International Airport and travel south in the direction of the Suez tunnel. There is a roundabout after the tunnel, where you should take the first exit, in the direction of Ras Sudr, El Tur and Sharm el Sheik. About a 1 hour drive from the tunnel, after the town of Ras Sudr, you will see a large sign for the Ramada Hotel. Turn right here into the hotel driveway.

Getting There via Sharm el Sheikh:
The only advantage of flying to Sharm el Sheik lies in the large number of charter carriers that fly to this destination, the best-known on the Sinai. Transfer time from the airport to Ras Sudr with our agent, Midland Travel, is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours. By taxi, it will take approximately the same length of time. There are several car rental centres in Sharm el Sheikh. To get to Ras Sudr, you should take the southern route along the harbour of Sharm el Sheik in the direction of El Tur. Continue along the road, which follows the seashore almost the whole time, until you see the large sign for the Ramada Hotel, about 15 km before Ras Sudr. Turn left here into the hotel driveway.

Charter Carriers and Scheduled Flights:
The major airline companies offer scheduled flights to Cairo International Airport daily from almost every European country. This means that your stay in Ras Sudr is not subject to the normal weekly schedule and you can come any day and stay for any number of days. However, charter companies, too, like Hapag-Lloyd, Air Berlin or Aero Flight, are again offering extremely attractively priced flights to Cairo.

Sharm el Sheik Airport is used almost entirely by charter companies of the major tour operators. Flights are extremely frequent and, to some extent, also very reasonable.

Green Sudr/ Creative Green Resort Ras Sidr

Location: The Green Ras Sudr Hotel is right on the beach of Ras Sudr. Our second Club Mistral and Skyriders centre is in front of the hotel. The Green Ras Sudr Hotel is a good 15 minutes on foot along the beach from the Ramada Ras Sudr Hotel.

Amenities and facilities: The hotel has 136 rooms in all. The spacious hotel has a large lobby with a 24h bar, reception, restaurant with wide terrace, roof terrace, billiard room, three conference rooms, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, swimming pool with pool and snack bar. Children are well catered for with a playground and large, separate kids pool. During the day, cool drinks are available at the beach bar. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet style in the main restaurant.

Our guests are accommodated mainly in the front wings, with views to the sea. From here it is not far to the centre and the main building of the hotel, containing the restaurant.

Rooms: The front three-storey blocks all have standard rooms and a suite. The standard rooms have a king-size bed or twin beds, bathroom with hairdryer, A/C, satellite TV and minibar, as well as a small balcony. The suites are more spacious and also has a couch for sitting. Some of them also have a separate bedroom.

Our Opinion: When you look for a bit more comfort in Ras Sudr you should choose the Green Ras Sudr Hotel. Distance to the Ramada is 15 walking minutes!

Wave Riders Kite Boarding at Ras Sidr

Kitesurfing holidays>Egypt>Ras Sudr>The Resort

Ras Sudr is a small town located about 37 miles south of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel which bridges the Suez canal and connects mainland Egypt to Sinai. Ras Sudr has been a favourite weekend destination for the elite of Cairo as it is only 2 hours away.

The beaches are superb and covered with the finest yellow sand, the winds are strong and smooth, and the sea a rich turquoise. As a relatively new and excellent kitesurfing holiday destination, it is pleasantly uncrowded!

The resort is quiet, so evening entertainment is based around the kite centre exclusively for Waveriders kitesurfers. The Paradise beach is without a doubt the best Kitesurfing spot in Ras Sudr.

Ras Sudr offers the best wind range and consistency in Egypt and is a resort for those looking to kite all day, every day in non-gusty winds.

The Wind in Ras Sudr is epic and very different to other Kitesurfing holiday destinations in Egypt. Ras sudr is in the Sinai so the winds hold moisture from the natural springs hidden under the desert, the winds get accelerated as are funnelled through the mountain ranges that flank the Suez Canal and are all day from 8 am till 8 pm and later a lot of the time.

From March to the end of October, the winds are consistently 18 to 25 knots and smooth as, so a joy to kite surf! It’s a no brainer if you want to kite surf multiple flat water spots, Ras Sudr is your spot!

Just one minute of your time

This is pretty simple... Please ask ten friends to each ask a further ten today!

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'. This doesn't cost you a thing.

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Please pass it along to people you know.

Update on Shannon Hughes

Shannon is safe and well and on her way home to New York.

It seems that her taxi was delayed coming through Sinai after the recent flooding and closure of the main highway.

All is well.

Shannon Hughes missing in Egypt

Gaza Freedom Marcher Missing in Egypt.

The Gaza Freedom March, was a delegation of almost 1400 people
from 43 countries around the world. Shannon is one of us. She traveled
with us to Egypt, then with a smaller group on to Israel, to promote a
message of peace. It is now our turn to do the same for her. Please
contact anyone in the media, especially our new friends in the Egyptian
media, who may be able to help her.

"Abducted/Missing in Egypt! GFMer Shannon Hughes has not been seen or
heard from in 3 days, with suspicious bank withdrawals tracing her from
Taba, Israel to Dahab, Egypt. They believe she is still in Dahab.
Please pass this along - as of yesterday the situation was declared
'dire' by US officials."

I have urgent news to report back to everyone... unfortunately its not good news.

Today I spoke with Kristen Coughlin Carr, the aunt of one of our dear
GFMers, Shannon Hughes (who was staying at Select Hotel). She informed
me that Shannon is missing in Egypt. It has been reported to the US
embassy, and they have declared her 'missing or abducted' and described
the situation as 'dire'. Here's the details she shared with me:

Shannon was last in Jerusalem. She was traveling with a friend. Her
friend returned home to the US. Shannon had planned on being on a
flight from Cairo to NY today, Friday January 22, 2010. She did not get
on that flight.

Earlier this week, Shannon called home. She told her mother "I need
money, I can't talk". Her family sent her $200 US. That was in Taba,
Egypt. She had planned on taking a bus from Taba back to Cairo to fly
home. The next thing her family heard from her were a series of weird
emails in which she said she said she was taking a cab to Dahab.
Shannon began withdrawing money from her bank account in small
increments in Taba, and the bank has her taking the last of the money
from her account in Dahab.

Her family has contacted the US embassy in Egypt. The US embassy has
declared Shannon missing or abducted after seeing the emails she sent.
They were advised not to deposit any more money in her bank account,
and hope that she will soon call home for more. They have not heard
from her in 3 days.

Kristen Coughlin Carr, her aunt has asked that anyone who is still in
Egypt, or who might know anyone still in Egypt contact her via
Facebook, by adding her as a friend. They are hoping that
facebook/twitter will greatly increase the chances of finding her. She
can be contacted directly through email kristencar@gmail.com. I have
attached a recent photo Kristen shared of Shannon.

Please spread the word.

Wind Surfing and Kite Boarding in Ras Sidr

Skyriders & Club Mistral - Ras Sudr

Based in: Egypt
The Club Mistral centre is on the far windward side of the Ramada Hotel. An approximately 100m-wide sandy stretch separates the centre from the flat turquoise water.

The long coastal strip curves windward here, creating a bay, and stretches further and further out into the water for a kilometre, forming a sandbank, before receding again. This has two effects. First, the wind can blow sideshore across the wide sandbank without hindrance and there are no gusts or turbulences. Second, flat water with a very slight chop ensures freeride and freestyle enjoyment pure. Another advantage: a (tide-dependent) touch-the-bottom area extending about 100 m into the sea at this part of the beach.

The north to north-east wind blows sideshore to 35 c sideshore and gains force during the morning, reaching its maximum by midday. So there's no need to hurry with breakfast. Towards the end of the afternoon, the wind generally dies down again. With a light breeze and flat water, the mornings offer ideal conditions for novices.

All in all, the spot can be classified as very safe with its sideshore wind, shallow area, fine sand and the adjacent marina. Naturally, we offer our "Unlimited Instruction" programme at this excellent training venue.

Flame Tree of Egypt

Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana or the Flame Tree is found all over Egypt.

One of the most beautiful and colourful trees around.

Getting calor gas refills in Ras Sidr

Trucks selling gas refills drive through Ras Sidr town every day, but if you miss him and need gas in a hurry, you can drive 5km South to the village of Abu Suweir to the gas refill station and get one there.
It is at the junction of the Main Sharm el Sheikh Road and the road to Qalat Al Guindi Citadel, opposite Abu Suweir village.

Update on floods in Ras Sidr

We called our neighbours last night expecting to drive to Sinai tonight to salvage what we could after the floods but he gave us good news and an update if anyone is interested.

Ras Sidr where we have our place, the town itself is unaffected.
Possibly because we are on higher ground and the buildings where we are are mainly villa's or on the other side of the main road concrete blocks of flats and not mudbrick or the usual bedouin type dwellings.
Ras Sidr had a quick flash flood and there were no reports of damage to housing or infrastructure.

Abu Suweir village 5kms to the South of us was very badly affected due to the bedouin type construction and it's situation below a mountainous range where water poured down and over the highway into the low lying area of Abu Suweir. One lady died and my neighbour said that many homes were destroyed.
The Army is there now erecting tents for evacuees.

The Main Road to Sharm el Sheikh is flooded and closed.
Sand has been washed from the mountain ranges down to the sea and covered many parts of the highway and it is impassable.

The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel from Cairo into Suez was closed last night due to flooding. No idea the status today.
It's advisable not to travel into Sinai at the moment over the Peace bridge because you will not be able to travel South till the army clear the highway.

Where to stay in Ras Sidr Town Centre

There are two very clean, modern hotels in the centre of Ras Sidr town I would recommend.

The first is the newly refurbished Ceceil Hotel.
It is situated a few minutes walk from the beach and Ras Sidr Town Centre.
Directions: At Ras Sidr Town turn right at 3 Mosaic Fish Monument and drive down Main St to the fork in the road. Keep to left at fork and then take first right. The Ceceil Hotel is on your left, next door to the Dolphin Hotel.

2 dead after flooding in Sinai

EL-TOR (Egypt) - Two died and at least nine were hurt as heavy rains and floods pounded Egypt's Sinai, forcing rescuers to move around parts of the peninsula by boat, officials and witnesses said Monday.

The Ras Sidr area on the west coast of the peninsula saw the heaviest flooding on Sunday night and rescue services used rubber rafts to search for the injured and those trapped in their homes, an official said.

' Two died and nine were injured in the town of Abu Sweira in Ras Sidr,' a security official told AFP.

Flooding blocked main roads in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh and heavy rains brought down the ceiling in a part of the airport, an AFP correspondent said.

Parts of Sinai including Taba, Nuweiba and Sharm el-Sheikh experienced electricity cuts as thousands of tourists in the popular diving resorts spent the night by candle light, in the worst flooding to hit Sinai since January 1994. -- AFP
